Job Search
Coming from a background in acting, I am no stranger to rejection. When you are acting, the rejection is expected and it is more on a fundamental level. For example, you are too tall, not blonde, wore the color green or just weren’t a fit for the role. In the non-acting job market, they want 3-5 years of experience you have no clue how to get because every single job interview says the same thing, “You lack the experience we are looking for”. How in the world are individuals supposed to get a job, much less a job in their desired field when they run into that in every interview? I keep asking myself this same question over and over again. I have been in interviews where they immediately think I don’t have a brain because my degree from Pepperdine was in acting. I’ve been told that I should have done internships or had a different major and that I value myself too high. Is no one willing to give people in their mid-late twenties who have decided to give a new path in life a chance? There are loads of people who went into a different field than what their undergraduate degree was in. Why can’t employers see past “theatre major, 2 years experience in marketing” and instead see “creative, problem solver with leadership skills, speaking skills, tenacity and courage”?
“In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.”
